The Letters of Heaven
acrylic on canvas - 36" x 48" - 1996
"The Letters of Heaven" written by Barry Lopez, appeared in print for the first time in the Fall 1997 issue of The Georgia Review. In 1998 this story was a finalist for the National Magazine Award in fiction. The first painting I did in response to this piece, is shown here. I find that fragments of this story continue to enter my thoughts when I am painting and appear as petals of roses carried by wind, or slices of light caught in time, brushstrokes wondering if the act of seeking might be a tangible thing - a color, a texture.
